8 reasons I like 22feet.in website– A Digital Agency from India

22feet.in just updated their website last night and I update my blog today on the things that i like about them.

  1. First I of course like them because my ex-colleague and friend Vineet Gupta is part of the 22Feet team. I know his passion and have heard about the other passionate people whom he works with.
  2. I have come across the web sites of many digital agencies which are nothing but flash brochures. 22feet.in on the other hand shows attitude, personality, creativity and the social nature of the digital business.
  3. 22feet.in is the site which I wouldn’t mind sharing with Smashingmagazine.com if they were carrying a feature related to – digital agency web design showcase, or design trends in India or how to showcase the philosophy of your brand name and logo – 22Feet does that with 22 highlights right on the home page.
  4. Indian Digital Agencies or for most of the Indian design people don’t get the power of Typography. I love typography. 22Feet.in have put Typography to good use, in their logos and visual iconography in the 22 highlights.
  5. Most of the design or digital agencies do not understand SEO or User Experience in conveying textual information. I have seen people uploading jpegs & flash for text and thanks 22feet for not doing that.
  6. How can a digital business exist without being social in the participatory age. 22feet links to all their social presence – foursquare, twitter and facebook. 600 fans on FB for a start in not bad and being mayor of your own office on FourSquare surely means that they know how to use the tools and not just preach.
  7. I got to know that 22feet.in is built on wordpress and I so like it. Any digital agency should know their business English – D for Drupal, W for WordPress, S for SEO, T for Typography, F for Fans and so on :-) .
  8. How many agencies would link to work or experts they appreciate, 22feet does that. Digital is participatory and social and people who link to good things Digital shows that they are connected and social.

Enough talking, go and check 22feet.in yourself

Dx1W: Designing for the first world; the rest saving the west

Dx1W is a competition for designers, artists, scientists, makers and thinkers in developing countries to provide solutions for the first world problems :

We live in a complex world, one full of inequities and wonderful things. Our fellows in the First World have been concerned for a while with us having the major share of the badness, so we thought, why don’t we pay back? After all, their life isn’t problem-free either. And that’s where this competition starts.

We’re calling artists, designers, tinkerers, makers, and thinkers with an idea to participate. Two conditions only: you were born in and live right now in a Developing Country and you are 13 years of age or older.

Developing into what, exactly?

What does it mean to be a developing country? Among other things it means that the future is to become developed. We are on our way toward development, and we assume that’s a great thing, but let’s stop to consider for a minute whether developed countries are something we want to turn into. Are people in developed countries happier or healthier? Do they live a better life? Do they have a better understanding of nature and live in a better equilibrium with the environment? Do they live in peace?

We have been focusing our energy and resources on trying to solve our Developing World problems to become more like the First World. But perhaps it is time that we, the so called Third World minds, focused our energy and creativity on solving some of the First World problems. We will have a brighter future to look forward to, and perhaps this can help us rethink and approach our current problems from a different perspective.

The competition deadline is 30th May and they are calling the solutions for:

  • Reducing obesity.
  • Addressing aging population and low birth rate.
  • Reducing consumption rate of mass produced goods.
  • Integrating the immigrant population.

The Importance of Typography in Web Design

Few days back I posted this question on LinkedIn asking about the importance of Typography in web design. Actually I was interested in gathering some personal insights and case studies, but didn’t find one.

But thanks to Christophe Peyras & Jiri Kindl I got this two interesting links which made my day:

  1. Web Design is 95% Typography
  2. Speed reading vs. typography

What is graphic design

What is the point of graphic design ? Is it advertising or is it art ? What purpose does it serve in our society and culture ? In his book "Graphic Design As Communication", Malcolm Barnard explores how meaning and identity are the core of every graphic design project and argues that the role and function of graphic design is, and always has been communication.

Malcom Barnard is Senior Lecturer in the history and theory of art and design at the University of Derby. His previous publications include Fashion as Communication, Art, Design and Visual Culture and Approaches to Understanding Visual Culture.

Here’s the quick snapshot of definition and functions of graphic design. (click to enlarge)

Graphic design definition & function

But here’s the most interesting definition of graphic design by Marshall Arisman who places art, illustration, graphic design in a scale of ‘purity’.

    1. Fine Art is pure.
    2. Illustration is the beginning of selling out.
    3. Graphic Design is commercial  art.
    4. Advertising is selling – period.
