I think the discussion of UGC, the content creation and the content moderation would never end. Users complain the lack of original content from the mainstream media and mainstream media complains about the raw and unpolished nature of the user generated content. I would like to cover this topic on my blog (soon). Content moderation is not a hassle or a challenge, it’s just a new thing that we have identified and for most of the media people it’s the new cost. The other resistance is the fact that some people believe that its a competition and a threat to their job. No it isn’t, its a news materials or a source which you used to find it in the libraries, other journalists, news agencies, tip offs from contacts and so on. Now these sources are coming to you and if they are raw and you have the opportunity to shine it up or to post it along with you own perspective.

Content moderation is collection of tools and features that you need to buit or utilize. There is no one solution for it, you have to use a process or the set of processes to control it. Content moderation is also very dynamic, as you learn you would know how it can be simplified and how actually users end up helping you more than you helping yourself. In future, most of the media sites will have a mix of professional and the UGC content, like the editors the moderator’s job will be also equally important. The current frustration is because everyone wants UGC but they are not ready how to ask for UGC, how to channelize UGC, how to control UGC, how to find and filter UGC and how to manage the quality of UGC. And on top of that, most the people are given the double duty of handling the professional and UGC content both.

Decide first, who manages the generation and who manages the moderation. May be not entirely, but it would somewhat simplify the things for you.
